Earning a whopping $3,635,000 after only 17 days after its release, “My Name is Khan” became the top-grossing film in North America for Bollywood icon Shahrukh Khan. The highly anticipated release hit the silver screen on February 12,, 2010 after the release was pushed back a few times.
“My Name is Khan” follows a Muslim man on a journey across America to win back his true love. The main character, Rizwan Khan, who suffers from Aspergers syndrome, is played by Shahrukh Khan. Khan’s character believes that there are two types of people in this world; the good who do good deeds and the bad who do bad deeds. After the death of his mother, Rizvan follows his brother to the United States where he meets and falls in love with a Hindu woman, Mandira, played by Kajol. Despite his brother’s objection, Rizvan marries Mandira and loves her boy Sameer as if he were his own. After the terrorist attacks on 9/11, 2001, attitudes toward Muslims change for the worse, even in the usually open-minded city of San Francisco.
Besides this intrguging plot, there was a lot of hype surrounding one of Bollywood’s most coveted on- screen couples, Shahrukh Khan and Kajol, hitting the silver screen yet again. It had been a while since the “Dilwale Dulhania le Jayenge” pair was featured in a film together and the public could not wait for the release. The Karan Johar directed flick was shot in San Fransico and the public’s anticipation grew stronger as SRK, Kajol and Karan flew overseas to the U.K. and the U.S. to promote the film right before it released.
The movie turned out to be a mega box-office hit and already a Bollywood classic!
